Update Any Home With Limewash!

Are you looking for a romantic node to the past that will still feel modern and unique? Then limewash just might be what you have been looking for! It’s a wall finish that can be dated back to the romans and has been used on both interior and exterior walls. Furthermore, you can apply it to multiple surface types such as plaster, stone and brick leaving you with an endless way of using it. Part of the reason for its diversity in ways of use is because it is made from crushed limestone that is burned and mixed with water.

This use of natural limestone material gives walls a matte and natural texture that adds depth and warmth to any room. Typical, limewash comes in neutral earthy tones however it has gained more popularity in resent years and you are now able to find a large array of colors. However, one thing to note is the limewash goes on the wall up to 10 times darker then how it dry’s. This means depending on how dark or pigmented you want the finished product to be you may need up to 3 coats.

Since limewash is made of a natural limestone and natural pigments you do not have to worry about the added solvents found in typical paint. Furthermore, due to the chemical make up of limestone and its high amount of pH level it is said to have a hypoallergenic quality!

Now, when it comes to using the limewash treatment on the lovely walls in your home most of us have basic drywall. Don’t fret the limewash will fix all your basic home wows! With the drywall, you will need to add one more step to the process by applying a mineral-based primer that typically runs around $10 and will allow the limewash to better adhere to the wall. Once your walls are ready for your limewash if you are just doing one average wall a quart should be enough and that will run you about $35. Additionally, if your limewash is in humid or high traffic areas it’s best to protect the treatment with a sealer to help with cleaning.
